The SYMBOL HELSINKI summary video is now available. We hope you enjoy it!

“As an artist and an art connoisseur, standing among these works, I feel it is my duty to emphasize the fundamental value that pulsates in every brushstroke by Ruth Schmidt: and that is freedom.

I believe that artistic freedom is not merely an aesthetic issue, but the last bastion of human dignity and autonomy. In an age that loves to confine thought within rigid boundaries, Ruth Schmidt dares to be free. She dares to go against trends, dares to be spiritual in the midst of materialism, and dares to build her own mythology amid the clamor of mass culture.

For the freedom of art is a reflection of human freedom. Only a free spirit is capable of creating and interpreting symbols; only a free person is capable of standing before the canvas and confronting their own depths. “—Curator Béla Balog opened my solo exhibition, ‘SYMBOL HELSINKI,’ at the Liszt Institute in Helsinki with these words, among others. It was moving to hear how he sees me and my art. I couldn’t have put it that way myself… Thank you so much, Béla!”

  • At the opening ceremony, Nelli Regina Surányi, director of the Liszt Institute in Helsinki, welcomed the participants
  • The text was translated into Finnish by Sanna Tiirikainen, the institute's program coordinator
  • Béla Balog, curator of the Dávid Gallery, summarized the artistic aspects of the exhibition
