„Giclée printing is a new, modern method of fine art printing that meets the highest expectations of artists, collectors, and museums.
Because of this, giclée fine art printing is now equivalent to much better-known traditional printing techniques – etching, screen printing, and lithography (e.g., Rembrandt also used the etching technique to create multiplied editions of his drawings).
Giclée reproduction prints are exhibited instead of original works in several museums and galleries around the world. This also proves that giclée is already accepted in the international art market.
Giclée art prints are the highest quality printed products available today, and are produced using the most advanced technology. However, giclée is not only a technique, but also an art publishing method: the artist can create a unique or limited-edition printed artwork of their computer graphic creation, digital photograph, or a digitized reproduction of an existing work.
The process of making a giclée print is a creative collaboration between the artist and the printmaker, in which the artist controls every detail of the process.
The term giclée print (from the original French meaning to squirt) has today become synonymous with state-of-the-art inkjet printing technology.
The dream of making copies of our works of such high quality that they can hardly be distinguished from the original has now become a reality.
Buyers like limited-edition prints because, beyond the signature, they are also authenticated by numbering. Because of this, they are willing to pay more even for a lesser-known artist's work when they see that the given print will one day no longer be available for purchase.
An artist selling their self-published prints can obviously offer their artwork to a larger audience if they have the alternative of selling them at a lower price as well. This way, they are not forced to lower the price of the original artwork, nor do they devalue it! Copies from a series edition make the image increasingly well-known, so the value of the original also keeps increasing. Through a clever combination of size, material, and the print run of a limited series, editions tailored to different budgets can be launched from the very same image.
We can create several types of products from our creators' images ranging from postcards to stretched canvas prints – but there is also the original artwork – so they can offer the works of art or gift items at various points of sale.
Like all painted, drawn, and printed works of art, the most important authenticating element of a giclée fine art print is the artist's own handwritten signature. In the case of a series, the numbering of the copies is also an important element.
A printed artwork can be produced as a single unique copy, in a closed or an open edition. Copies within a closed edition of a printed artwork must be considered the same artwork if they match in the following aspects:
• Creator's name
• Title of the work
• Size of the artwork
• The material on which the print was made
• Total number of copies (it is useful to indicate the number of artist's proofs marked EA)
On the printed copies, the most important element is the creator's signature or the seal impression, dry stamp impression used instead of it – or perhaps a combination of the former.
The certificate is the letter of authenticity for the fine art print. It contains the data of the closed editions and unique copies, as well as the statement of the artist and the publisher that no more copies of the given work will be made than the specified number. It includes the date of the artwork's release, which can be the date of the approval of the proof or the completion of the first copy.
We keep a registry of the copies in the unique and limited series of prints produced by us. In order for the certificate issued by us to be authentic, we must monitor the copies of each giclée edition and their sequential numbering. The administration of the publication of the artworks is conducted under the name Pigmenta Kiadó. Each print receives an identifying holographic label, which features the registration number in addition to the Pigmenta Kiadó logo. A duplicate of the label is affixed to the certificate, thereby ensuring the connection between the print and its corresponding certificate through this paired labeling system.
The Pigmenta Publishing certificate is produced with special anti-copy security graphics used in banknotes. It contains information in Hungarian and English, and in addition to the signatures, it also features a holographic identification label and the impression of our stamp.” - Pigmenta Publishing
